To help you understand what is good and what is a bad thing to do during this period of chemical peeling, we describe all the recommendations in 2 broad categories, Dos and Don’ts. The idea is simple and is described below.
DO’s For Speeding Up The Chemical Peel:
Vaseline is an inexpensive and effective treatment for dry scaly skin. Use an ample amount of Vaseline to spread it over the face after gently washing off your face. This will make the skin very smooth and easy to get rid of dead skin. It will promote healing by preventing dryness and infection, to repair the skin faster and better.
Eager to go to the beach but wondering what will it do your skin? Your worry is correct. The sun can cause unwanted damage to the skin and can greatly affect the healing process after chemical peeling. To save the skin from the damaging ultraviolet rays in the sunlight, experts recommend sunscreen application before going out from home.
The sun-blocking agents provide a layer of protection from the sun rays which can interfere with the damage repair of skin after chemical peeling. Even if you are not going into direct sunlight, still you are supposed to apply sunblock because you are exposed to the reflected ultraviolet rays. So, you are allowed to enjoy the beach but consider protecting your skin from the sun.
The peeling skin increases the surface area exposed to the external environment. The more the surface area, the more there will be evaporation through the skin. And the dehydrated skin does not heal well. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water to keep the blood circulation to the skin high enough to speed up the healing process.
When the body is dehydrated, the blood flow to the skin is restricted to maintain the optimal blood flow to the vital organs. The blood circulation is essential damaged skin for the continuous supply of anti-inflammatory agents and removing toxins from the site. If this natural process is failed to be maintained, then there is a high probability that the damaged skin areas will get infected which will eventually delay healing.
CONSIDER TOPICAL STEROIDS
After the chemical peeling, the skin will be dry, itchy and irritated. The idea of scratching and rubbing the skin will be more satisfying but I will discourage it with all the force. Never try to scratch the skin.
The topical steroids are the anti-inflammatory agents which will reduce the reactionary skin itching. It will help you to keep your hands away from your face. The steroids will settle down the inflammation really quick and will narrow down the period of skin healing, promoting the generation of new skin cells to replace the damaged one. And soon you will end up getting a new layer of skin, free from scars and other skin problems.
HYALURONIC ACID AND CERAMIDES
The hyaluronic acid and ceramides in the facial serums and face creams are most recommended to speed up skin healing. The hyaluronic acid is effective in trapping the hydration within the skin, leaving it soft and preventing it from drying. Apply these products on the irritated skin for easy and quick peel off without any damage to the skin.
ALOE VERA GEL & MOISTURIZERS
The Aloe Vera gel is full of the natural goodness of healing power. It soothes up the dry scaly skin. It will prevent further scaling and peeling of skin, will help to decelerate the skin damage. The Moistures will work the same as the Aloe Vera does. Carefully select the moisture because at this stage your skin will be very sensitive. Prefer the moistures which are dermatologically tested, free of allergens and hence suitable for delicate skin. The moisturizer should be free from sulfates, paraben, silicates and PABA. These ingredients can exaggerate the skin irritability and interfere with the skin renewal process.
TOPICAL ANTIBIOTICS OINTMENT
Even if your skin peeling is going great, the prophylactic topical antibiotics application is always recommended. Apply the thin layer of topical antibiotics ointment onto the peeled off edges of the skin. The elevated edges of the skin work as a gateway for the entrance of bacteria in between the layers of skin. The bacteria will make a nest in between the slips of dead skin and cause skin infections which can cause scarring in the upcoming skin layer. This can ruin the chemical peeling with the end result even worse than before.
Damp a clean face towel in ice-cold water and gently press it against the inflamed skin. Do not rub the towel along the skin. This temperature drop will subside the local production of inflammatory mediators like histamine. You will instantly feel the difference with reduced redness and itching.
Do not rub an ice cube on your face because first of all, it involves rubbing, which is not healthy for your skin, secondly, the direct application of ice cube does not give you much control. Excessive cold can cause the thawing of the cells means that the cell will freeze to death. The temperature control is crucial and you can go wrong with it, easily. Using a face towel and a bowl of ice-cold water is a way better option.
DON’Ts For Speeding Up The Chemical Peel :
DO NOT EXFOLIATE
Use a gentle cleansing formula to wash your face every day. Although the peeling off skin does not look good and you want to get rid of it asap but exfoliation is not an option. Wait for a few days or you have to undergo another chemical peeling soon.
Scrubbing off the skin after chemical peel not only sloughs off the dead cells but also scratches the surface of newly made, immature skin and makes it vulnerable for abrasions and Bacterial infections. When the new skin will get mature then it will automatically slide of the older, damaged skin. So, wait for this phenomenon to happen.
DO NOT WEAR MAKEUP
There are lots of harsh components in the makeup products. There are a lot of hidden spots and open pores in the skin when there is chemical peeling going on. The makeup will not cover up the rough, scaly skin and your skin will look more rough and scaly under the layers of makeup. The fine granules of face powder or the concealer will accentuate the open pores and spaces.
Due to irritated skin, you would not be able to clean up your makeup properly. It can lead to excessive bacterial growth, acne and pimples, with other skin problems. And it can ruin the goal of chemical peel very quickly. So take care of your skin and skip makeup for a week for better results.
AVOID PETROLEUM OR OIL-BASED SKIN PRODUCTS
The products which contain petroleum or with are oil-based formulations are strictly inhibited on irritated and inflamed skin, whether because of chemical peeling or any other skin problems. The oil or petrolatum-based lotions and skin products have the tendency to absorb heat and trap it for a longer period of time, which causes exaggerated peeling due to burns.
DO NOT GO INTO THE DIRECT SUNLIGHT
Avoid exposure to sunlight as much as you can. The sun rays will cause two-way damage to the skin. One, it will expose the skin to the heat which can worsen the inflammatory reactions. Two, the ultraviolet rays in the sunlight are damaging to the skin, as it can halt the skin repair by damaging the skin cells at the molecular levels, causing DNA mutations and even skin cancer. After even applying sunscreen, you would not be able to completely escape these consequences.
SKIP VIGOROUS EXERCISE
Avoid doing aggressive exercise during the period of skin peel off to prevent the skin from getting sweaty. The sweat will lodge up the pores with salts and it will be perceived as foreign bodies in the pores such as bacteria and reaction against it will end up having pimples. Exercise is not a problem in the normal scenario but as it is already described that you would not be able to wash off your face properly during peeling, can result in disaster.
